I retract my former statement. White smoke means one of two things; 1) is coolant in the combustion chamber, this usually means the head gaskets are torn, but could mean a cracked head. Neither of these is common. 2) is air in the fuel system. Since air compresses and diesel doesnt when it enters the combustion chamber there is WAY more air then fuel, this creates a 'hot burn' situation. Check the fuel filter housing for leaks, then check all the fuel lines.

definitly not a headgasket problem.. the coolant hasent even dropped or bubbled over.. could be air in the fuel system.. didnt think about that but its running rich so i dont think it would be that..

Rich burning would be black smoke. White is incomplete combustion, that makes me think even more that its air in the lines.

You can test the fuel pressure between the lift pump and the injection pump, but the pressure between the IP and the injectors would be very high and dangerous to test. After checking for fuel system leaks, check that the lift pump is working. If thats fine then your pickup tube inside the tank is the next most likely cause.

Water will make white smoke, but it would have to be A LOT of water, and your truck has a water seperator in the fuel filter, and when that fills up with water, the SES or WIF light will come on.

Wait? you only have 1/8 of a tank and it is smoking? Fill the truck up. If the problem goes away then the pickup tube has a hole in it, and thats how air is going into the system.
