| there's an aftermarket 1 that's supposedly a lot better.. supposed to screw right in just like the OEM style but you can pull it apart and clean it or just replace the element | |

| oh, and if that doesn't help.. take the carb apart and clean it really well.. you might have some mud floating around in there that's clogging it up.. my buddy had that problem with his rochester on his 78 | |

| ok it seems to be fixed! haha i pulled the fuel filter and it had collapsed, and wen it dried out i found that it was muddy. hmmmm wonder where that came from lol. anyway i replaced it, the breather filter, and the air filter, and took it for a drive. it only cut off once at the beginning, and now it seems to be running fine. ill keep yall updated, but the problem seems to finally be solved. thanks for yalls help, it is greatly appreciated. and yea im runnin a quadrajet carb, for future reference lol | |

| more issues went to drive it a bit the other day, and found that itl idle all day long. but as soon as i ease it in gear and try to take off, it acts like its runnin outta fuel. ima check the fuel filter again, and then on to the fuel pump. i just cant seem to get ahead, i finally got the boat runin right after 5 yrs, and both trucks act up within a week of each other. i backed in that stupid river almost a year ago and it haunts me still...... still havent gotten the turn signals to work again.... | |

Still sounds like a fuel supply issue. Some times there is an inline fuel filter under the cab in the frame rail. I don't think your fuel pick up in the tank is completely clogged, that's rare. | |

| ok fellas, i have an UPDATE!!!! haha. ok, so my dad and i finally got frustrated and put it in the garage. we pulled the gas tank and found several issues. 1) a small hole in the top of the tank, most likley from when i drilled holes in the bed to mount roll bars some years ago. 2) various rotten rubber lines. 3) somehow the outlet on the sending unit is loose, not really sure how that happened. 4) the filter sock on the sending unit has a quarter sized hole in it, and literally fell apart in my hand. 5) this is the biggest issue, badly contaminated gas! lots of water as we were sifoning it out, and when we got it out, we also found two handfuls of river sand in the bottom of the tank. surprise surprise. so im pretty sure we found my problem, i only hope my carb isnt screwed as well. we'll just hafta see in a few days when i get er back together. | |

| So... it was a fuel issue... never would have guessed that.... - merlin5577 wrote:

| me too. had to order the sending unit today, i'll get it tomorrow after work. went to the nearest autozone, and the guy cut the hoses i needed and then WALKED OFF! WTF? i had to get somebody else to order it for me, but i got it. that thing costs $70, that seems a little steep to me. but anyway, i hope to get it back together tomorrow night. | |

| ok, i think ive got it fixed. i got it all back together around 9:30 last night, and took it for a spin. it was running better, but still had some stumbling issues in 3rd and 4th. today, i replaced the filter in the bottom of the carb as a last result before i tore the carb down. i drove it for a few miles while ago and it ran like a new one. i'm thinkin last night was just the last of that crap burning out of the lines and all. ima drive it some this weekend to make sure, and if all goes well i plan on makin the 90 mile trip to work and back on monday in it. so pending further investigation, i think i can now pronounce it fixed and it only took me 15 months lol | |

| Jus thought I would update my old thread. It started giving me problems again a week or so later, so I had my cousin look at it when he came up. Turns out I had a plug wire crossed. I'm not sure how it happened since I never messed with the plugs but oh well. Now it's been close to a year, and it's running great. I put my swamped in storage and put some 33's on it. I let my bro in law keep it for me. He drives it a couple times a week to haul trash off. It's much better for him to drive it than for it to sit under the shed. I'll hopefully be able to bring it to nc with me in a couple more months so I can start working on it again. | |
