PostSubject: installing headers on a '85 4X4 GMC   December 16th 2009, 10:03 am

I have a 1985 GMC sierra classic 4X4 and i want to ditch the manifolds and install some headers, i have been reading, and im concerned about clearance on the passenger side (apparently thats the side GM likes to stick stuff) ive got the starter, 4X4 drive shaft, and a few other things that i think might get in the way, what headers do i need that would fit? i looked at the edelbrock shortys, but im not spending 600 dollars on a set of headers, so what are my options, i was looking to spend under 200 for a set, im also re doing the exaust system, with new pipes, and im installing side pipes, for stacks in the bed, when i get it done, it will look good, its just the headers thats worrying me, thanks

i have 3 trucks like yours and all of them have had headers at one point. none of them where 4wd but i can tell you that they wont get in the way of your driveshaft.. thought you probley are gonna have to pick up the motor a little to get them in.

IIRC your truck has a 305 in it correct? If so I did a quick search on Summit and they have a lot of different headers for you to choose from.

http://www.summitracing.com/search/year/1985/make/GMC/model/K15-K1500-PICKUP/Engine-Size/5-0L-305/Department/Exhaust/Section/Headers/?Ns=Rank%7cAsc

yeah i was lookin at my 454 and you have more room then i do for sure.. i got mine in without lifting the motor so you shouldnt have a problem.. i think you have to disconnect the steering shaft though just till you snake that side in. it will sound alot better after you do the exhuast.. hp is always a plus.. i wouldnt even care about the hp.. i just want the sound.. lol

yeah HP and sound is what i want, now all i need to do is find a set of chrome curved top 3" stacks for a reasonable price, thats the last expensive item, then i just have to get all the pipe pieces put it all together, its going to look very cool when im done, especially with the stacks

ok i just got done installing the headers, now its backfiring.....

i just put Flowtech headers on my '85 GMC truck and now its backfiring out of the exhaust on the driver side bank ONLY as of right now it has 2 1/2'' collectors with 45 degree down angles on it, nothing else. blue flame is coming out of the pipe and loud enough to make it sound like a 12 GA shotgun going off

it only does it when: idling, and RPM decelerating, if i keep the engine above 1000 RPM it goes away, but when i let off it starts backfiring about every 2 or 3 seconds

these replaced the stock manifolds, in the process a bolt broke and i tried to heat the head there the stud was coming out and i tryed heating it from inside of the exhaust port with a rosebud i only had the tip in about 1/4''. did that screw up anything?

also was doing some reading and said that it means its too rich, but why did it start now.

thanks, hope its not serious

its not serious at all.. you just need to adjust your carb a little bit.. it was probley backfiring before but because of the poor flowing stock maniflolds you didnt hear it.. once you get your exhuast done then i would tune the carb.. it may go away.. i know my 85 runs like crap when the exhuast drops..

Yeah not having enough back pressure from running open headers will cause a backfire too... I know when I ran open manifolds on my 350 it backfired like crazy!!! Nothing to worry about I bet once you get a full exhaust on your truck the backfiring will go away.

Agreed. Once you have a full exhaust on it will go away. If the carb wasnt giving you trouble before, its probably fine.

turns out that i had 2 spark wires mixed up got it straightened out put my 2 1/2'' collectors on with a 45 degree bend piece angled out, left it like that and drove it today, sounds awsome ill run it like that till i get the rest of my exhaust on, has that dragster rumble, i like it, it gave me a lot more low end torque, had to show off some, squealed the tires a few times, I LOVE MY TRUCK
