| Does anybody know anything about Excel shotguns? I bought a 12 gauge single shot here a couple days ago, and the only thing it says on it is Excel. My guess would be it was made sometime in the 20s. Its in pretty decent shape for being an old gun, id say well worth 90 bucks. Heres a link to a gun thats pretty much identical to the one I bought: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/excel-shotgunClick where it says ZOOM on the left, theirs a few pics. | |

| Never even heard of Excel, but that looks like a solid gun. Only difference between that and my old NEF is yours has a swing bar release. I'd say you did pretty good John. I cant tell you the age, but if it doesnt have serial numbers, its pre-1968. | |

| From what ive gathered from google, Excel was made by Montgomery Wards for Iver Johnson. Idk, it doesnt really matter to me that much, I was just more curioius than anything.
I really like the gun, but man that thing kicks like a mule LOL

| Single barrels always do! Not much weight to them, so you feel all the recoil. Does it have a serial number on it anywhere? | |

| Usually it will say; "serial #" and a number. If not, its most likely the model number. Do you have any pictures of it? | |

| Post up the numbers. I bet I could dig something up for ya.
Oh, and post the locations of the numbers as well like barrel, stock, etc. I play around at my local gunsmith shop pretty much every day (my buddy owns it), so I could probably find some info for ya.

| Well, I'm not gonna be going out to the gun shop for a few days since it's the weekend now, and I gotta take some tests on Monday, but I did do a little online searching for you. While I haven't gotten anything yet on the numbers, I did come across something interesting that I'm not sure if you know yet or not. Here is a post from a thread on an online forum and the link to said thread: Excel shotguns are/were "Trade Brand Name" shotguns made for and sold by Montgomery Wards. They were made by three makers, Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT, Iver Johnson's Arms * Cycle Works of Fitchberg,MA and Crescent -Davis Arms Corporation also of Norwich,CT. Without a photograph it is difficult to tell who made the gun but the number you give sounds like an Iver Johnson's. Crescent and Crescent-Davis did not use letter prefixs or sufixes to the serial number. There is no published serial number-year made tables for Iver Johnson shotguns. There is a correspondent by the name of Bill Goforth who has done much research on Iver Johnson and has written several books. Perhaps he will see your message and respond. As you know, value depends on condition and can range from about $100 for one in factory new condition to less than $10 for a rusty, rotten incomplete piece of junk that might make a decent tent peg Here is the link. That was the only post in the thread other than the original, but I'm sure they may have more on the website about Excel's: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=169788&start=0#ixzz1BnqVwKUW | |
