PostSubject: Picked up a Hypertech   July 7th 2010, 10:44 pm

So a few weeks ago I picked up a Hypertech programmer for my Silverado from a friend who was upgrading. All I have to say is... WOW. Not what I was expecting. Very cool. The 90HP and 200LB-FT increase turned it into a beast! Plus, I went up 2MPG.

SWEET !!! Sounds like fun.
I'm still researching chips and tuners... I still have full drive train warranty.
So I'm trying to find one that is undetectable. but I'm beginning to see that's impossible.
If they suspect any mods to the truck? apparently there is a place they can go in your computer that will rat you out. I don't know... maybe is some kind of vehicle history.

Some time I think I should just bite the bullet and just do it. The truck is 3 yrs old already, if anything big was gonna go wrong with the drive train? it would have by now. But then it's kinda nice still having the warranty... yesterday (July 07) my truck went in for 4 outstanding recalls and while it was getting it's full drive train service the tech found a $200 rear U join beginning to go bad. It was nice it got replaced for free.

Sorry about the key board diarrhea

Love to see some video if possible or even a pic of the black smoke.

Laughing I didnt doubt you, it was just a matter of finding one that wasn't a ton of money. Most of the tuners out there are $300 and up. I got this for $150 shipped. Not bad if I do say so myself.

No worries Glenn. I will try to shed some light on this. There are two different types of 'tuners'. One plugs into the OBD port and rewrites the program that controls the engine/trans. This is the type I have. The other type is a plug in 'module' that goes in line to the engine harness and actually intercepts the signal from the ECM/tcm and changes it to whatever you want. Now, i'm not going to tell you what to do, and i'm warning you now, proceed at your own risk. IF you wanted to get around detection, go with the 'module' type. Thats IF you want to take the risk. I personally waited until my warranty ran out before adding the tuner. That being said, there are a few other loop holes, at least in the US. One, the magnuson-moss act says a dealer cannot void a warranty because of an aftermarket part, unless they can prove the part directly caused the failure. Two, aftermarket parts manufacturers can apply for Exemption Orders (EO #'s) from CARB so that when you go for an inspection, they cant fail you for having aftermarket parts. My intake and the tuner both came with EO #'s and stickers I had to put on my upper radiator support. I dont know if any of this applies to Canadian trucks, but its worth looking into. Any other questions, just ask.

As for pictures, I will try my best, as it only smokes at WOT. Laughing

The Exemption Orders are interesting I didn't know about that.. I'll have to look into it some more. I'm sure it must be up here too, I don't see why not. I think a Module sounds like a good idea. I'll have to look into it a lil more, But right now I'm saving for some new boots for my truck.

Hell yeah. I had those same tires on my truck when I bought it and I hated them. Get some new ones quick Glenn.

As for modules, if I had your truck, I would honestly go with the Banks Economind. Its not detectable on the ECM, plugs right in, gives you a nice boost in power and economy, AND, it wont destroy your DPF.

Even with my heavy foot and the hauling i've been doing, my life average has gone UP to 18.5MPG. No problems to report, other then the right side of my rear bumper is now black...

That is good news, glad to hear it is working out as they claimed. Sounds like fun too.

Oh man, the fun factor is amazing! Put it in 4HI, tow/haul mode on, foot brake to 1600RPM, let off the brake at the same time mashing the throttle and HOLD ON!!

Laughing In my defense, I have never hit anything with my truck. Every ding/dent/scratch/broken-mirror has been from someone hitting me. Laughing

the tuner debate is an interesting one for sure

As i understood it, even an "inline-tuner" box will cause goofy reading in the ECM, like if the box commands more fuel to the rail than what the ecm normally would it will be recorded in the ecm, they can scan previous parameters and if any are beyond what they would normally see they will know

That being said, a tuned duramax is really the cats hind-end, My truck is tuned with a 360rwhp tune(300rwhp stock, same as an lmm) and it makes one hell of a difference, i went from 13mpg stock to 18mpg consistently with a tune, I know for a fact that a tuned DPF equipped LMM will not be a happy camper at all, my Brothers LMM was hating life untill he finally cut the restrictive muffler, cat and DPF, and not it runs like a champ, and it runs HARD

EFI live is a beautiful thing cheers

You might find this interesting Robert.
I've read this in other places too.
This is compliments of Ross at EFI Live

Some of the common questions we are asked are -

Q - Can GM really detect if my LMM ECM has ever had a non stock tune even if I've put my stock tune back in?
A - Yes as the ECM will log the CVN's of the calibration segments each time it is reprogrammed and store them (up to 10).

Q - Can I just reflash the stock tune back in 10 times?
A - No, the ECM is too smart, it only updates it's internal list if the CVN is different to one already stored.

Q - Can the programming history be erased with TechII if I slip my mechanic a $100 bill?
A - No, the ECM does not allow the history to be erased for obvious reasons.

Q - Can the CVN's be fooled on a non stock tune?
A - No, CRC type checksums cannot be fooled within the constraints of the flash memory space / layout of the ECM.

Currently the LMM is the only vehicle this programming history is activated on, but it would be a safe bet this will expand in to all new models over the coming years.

thats the one think i hate about newer GM's. i have access this little (and i use that word litely) machine that i use to diagnos dodges and i can wipe the history clean. of course it is a dealer only diagnostic tool but my buddies dad use to work as the head chysler mechanic on the east coast so.. i will get ahold of a GM laptop one of these days and see about what i cant hack there ecu programing. lol
